Alright, we know we’ve covered this before, but it feels like a good time to come back to it. Here at Baxter, we are proud to be a pioneer in the canned craft beer movement in Maine and New England. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you why we made the decision from the get-go to become the first all-can brewery in New England.
Canning offers a variety of consumer AND environmental benefits. First and foremost, canned means you’re getting the best quality product every time you crack open one of our many offerings. Do did you know that light is one of the biggest factors that can degrade beer over time. As no light can enter a can, canned beer often has a better shelf life and preserves the freshness and quality of beer to a higher degree.
Oxygen can also be a killer when it comes to shelf life. As beer oxidizes, it loses flavor and quality. Not only are cans better at keeping air out, but our canning process is done via a “counter-pressure” system. The machine pushes out any residual oxygen in the can with CO2, and as the can fills with beer, it also pushes the existing CO2 out, meaning only liquid is left in the can when it’s all said and done.
As you all probably know by now too, we try to be as environmentally friendly as possible here at Baxter. Our can-only business model fits well into our pro-environment ideologies. Not only is aluminum a more frequently recycled material, but aluminum is also lighter than glass. We can ship three times as many cans as we could the same amount of bottles. This, in turn, means fewer trips to and from our warehouse, the can manufacturer in Saratoga NY, our distributors, and so-on…so we save a massive amount of energy shipping cans versus glass.
Cans are made from aluminium, and aluminium is a 100% recyclable material. In fact, around 80% of all the aluminium produced is still in use today because of its high recycling rates. So our cans material can be used again, and again as the years go on. Cans as a whole are just easier to recycle, being lighter, crushable (but not breakable), and made from an easily repurposed material.
Long story short, we can because we care. We care about the quality of our product and we care about the environmental impact of our beer. Anytime someone cracks open a Baxter it’s our hope that they’ll be able to taste just how much we put into providing you with great beer.
